Holidays to the European lakes and mountains aren’t about lying on a sunbed, reading a novel and slipping into the swimming pool. The life, the culture, the fresh mountain air makes you to want to get out and explore it, to awaken your senses.
For example, the Italian Lake District is, quite simply, beautiful. Quaint lakeside towns and villages to explore, experience Italy’s views and culture as well as enticing restaurants and lively bars. And no visit to Italy would be complete without taking in one of the cultural cities Milan, Verona or Venice.
Or take another example, the Austrian Tirol. You’ll be surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks, green valleys and mountain streams, cascading waterfalls, pre-historic villages like Hallstatt, the musical city of Salzburg and its impressive fortress or, surrounded by mountain peaks, the Olympic city of Innsbruck.
If you love walking, Austria and Switzerland should definitely be destinations to cross off your list. As one of Europe’s premiere walking destinations there’s an extensive range of trails covering mountain terrain, lake shores, valleys and woods. Walking is not the only activity you can get stuck into though – take a dip in crystal clear lakes, jump on board a boat trip or spend some time cycling. Golf also features highly on the radar, with over 20 courses to choose from in the Tirol alone.
You’d be missing out if you didn’t capture some of Austria’s wonderful local culture too. Music, arts and traditional festivals are held all over throughout the summer months. Tuck in at St Johann’s annual Dumpling Festival or perhaps sit out at a street café and admire local lederhosen-adorned troupes performing live music and dancing in the picturesque town squares.
Another country in the lakes and mountain region is Slovenia. Explore the medieval castles of Lake Bled and Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana. Come to hear tales of the legendary Zlatorog, the golden-horned buck who roams the Triglav Mountains close to Kranjska Gora. Scale the peaks and passes of Vogel and Vršič, take a refreshing dip in Lake Bohinj or go underground to the Postojna Caves. Visit Lipica and its iconic white horses or simply head to Portorož and Piran for a taste of Slovenia’s 43km of coast.
