Several Brits are travelling out to Ischgl next week to carve themselves a place on the ski slopes, not exactly for posterity but at least for a bit of fame as they are taking part in the annual Shapes In White snow sculpture contest in this Tirolean resort.
Yorkshiremen Justin Scott and Nigel Summersgill, plus London-based Dieter Faust and Tony Walker are travelling out to Ischgl this weekend to carve snow sculptures on this year’s theme of Volkswagen (aka VW), to acknowledge the successful co-operation between Ischgl and Volkswagen now in its second winter.
For Justin it’s a return to the competition after a break of two years while he established his gardening business in East Riding and he is joined by his long-standing friend Nigel, a craftsman and cabinet-maker. They will be creating a VW Dune Buggy from a 4m pile of snow, based on a 10 inch model car.
German-born Dieter and London plumber Tony have the title On Top Of The World for their VW creation. It’s Tony’s second appearance in the contest, while Dieter is a regular entrant.
Ten pairs of artists from all over Europe will be taking part in the 20th Shapes in White event. Each team has a 4m pile of snow, courtesy of the resort’s piste-grooming machines. The sculptors work at different points all over the slopes, so the result will be an open-air snow art gallery that skiers and boarders can enjoy until the exhibits melt in the spring at the end of Ischgl’s five month long snowsure winter season.
For the first time, holidaymakers can have their say in the judging and nominate their favourite exhibit – and there will be a prize draw from the nominations received. For details please click on the Shapes in White link on www.ischgl.com and open the pdf judging forms. People not in resort but wishing to follow the sculptors’ progress can do so via the webcams on the website.
