Crystal Ski, the leading ski specialist operator in the UK, today announced that it has been awarded the CarbonNeutral® office certification by reducing its carbon footprint in their head office in Kingston-upon-Thames to net zero for the fourth consecutive year. Since 2003 Crystal has been in partnership with The CarbonNeutral Company, providing customers with the option to offset emissions from travel (total tonnage of customers off-setting for their flights is around 20,000 tonnes) and since 2008, taking responsibility for the company’s head office emissions.

To achieve CarbonNeutral® office certification, Crystal Ski worked with The CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world’s leading provider of carbon reduction solutions, to measure and reduce its carbon footprint to net zero. All the emissions relating to the head office, including energy consumption, waste and business travel were quantified and then reduced through combining internal changes (switching to low energy use monitors and printers as well as increased recycling facilities) with carbon offsetting. Through offsetting, every unavoidable tonne of CO2 emitted by Crystal Ski is matched by an equivalent amount saved by a project somewhere else in the world. Crystal Ski has selected two offset projects based in China to achieve CarbonNeutral® office certification: the Hufu Waste Heat Recovery project where clean electricity is generated at a cement manufacturing plant (standard: VER); and the Tieling Methane capture project which not only prevents the release of this harmful greenhouse gas, but uses it as an energy source to supply gas to homes and local industry (standard: VCS; Green-e Climate).

Simon Cross, managing director Crystal Ski: “We are proud to be one of the first mainstream ski companies in the UK to have achieved CarbonNeutral® office certification. From research we know that 63% of our customers find climate change and carbon emissions an interesting sustainability issue and because of this we felt that we needed take direct action to tackle it. By taking a net zero position on emissions we have taken the strongest environmental position possible for our head office and we are now working towards a 15% internal emissions reduction target over the next three years.”

Sustainable tourism is not just an idea to us, it is fundamental. This means protecting resources everywhere we take our customers – after all, they are resources we are depending on for the future of our business. So we work hard to provide high quality holidays that cause minimal environmental impact, that respect the culture and people of the destinations we take people to, and that offer real economic benefit to local communities”, he continued.

Rebecca Fay, marketing director, The CarbonNeutral Company, “Crystal Ski was a pioneer when it became the first mainstream tour operator to offer customers CarbonNeutral® flights in 2003 – an initiative that is still running today. Since then, the company has strengthened its environmental responsibility by extending its CarbonNeutral® programme to its head office. This enduring commitment not only demonstrates leadership, but alignment to the values of Crystal’s customers.”
